2013 National InVEST Teacher of the Year
Recipient provides hands-on training and career connections to students
Marcelina Pascual, who teaches high school business and adult education classes at Roosevelt Senior High School in Washington, D.C., is the 2013 InVEST Teacher of the Year Award. Pascual has served as a teacher for more than 15 years, including 10 years on the Roosevelt Senior High School faculty. She also teaches the program with Roosevelt S.T.A.Y., an alternative education program for adult students who would like to earn a high school diploma, take the G.E.D. or seek other career opportunities.
Insurance education. Career training. Guest speakers. Scholarships for insurance licensing. Hands-on training. These are just a few of the abundant free InVEST resources 2013 National InVEST Teacher of the Year recipient Marcelina Pascual took advantage of in her adult education classroom at Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C.
Pascual has been using InVEST’s free resources for four years in her Roosevelt High School class. In 2013, Marcelina took on a new role with the school teaching adult education students at the Roosevelt STAY program. Through the InVEST program, Pascual is teaching and training her adult education students about insurance and the careers available in the industry. Not only do students gain typical classroom instruction about insurance terms, coverages, etc., they are also utilizing hands on tools like the free insurance rating software to see what information is needed to process an insurance policy quote, what items affect premiums, and more.
In addition, the InVEST program at Roosevelt STAY is supported by numerous insurance volunteers who guest speak to the students about different insurance topics, and have even taken the students on field trips to local insurance offices and insurance claim centers. This interaction with insurance professionals not only provides a firsthand view on the topics, but provides valuable career connections for the students. Five of Pascual’s students won an InVEST scholarship in 2013 to take their insurance licensing exam this fall and pursue insurance careers.
Pascual will officially receive her award during the 2013 Big “I” Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas in front of Big “I” leadership. Congratulations to Marcelina and all of the InVEST teachers who make a difference every day.
